Horse Grinder

Article in the new media outlet “The Intercept” reveals many revelations from Snowden released documents and other whistleblowers. My short summary:

–NSA (in collaboration with CIA and JSOC) gather information on electronic communications (mostly metadata) and locations of suspected terrorists around the world

–Based only on these data the people holding those devices are assassinated by drones strikes or night raids.

–No dew process, they often not even sure who was actually killed

–Drones also used to suck up all wireless electronic information on their flights. Using drones NSA/CIA/JSOC “mapped the Wi-Fi fingerprint of nearly every major town in Yemen.”

–NSA gathered information was used in the killing of two American citizens in Yemen.

–These are the new tools of the military industrial complex and we should expect they will be used on US soil in the future (if not already)

Corporations Are Not People

by Nash Turley on December 6

Matt Damon reads from Howard Zinn’s speech “The Problem is Civil Obedience” (November 1970) from Voices of a People's History on Vimeo.

A new study in Political Research Quarterly finds that US Senators “…show consistent responsiveness toward upper income constituents” but no response to poor constituents. A powerful demonstration that this is a plutocracy not a democracy. Study reported on here and by The Young Turks:

Facebook’s Terms and Conditions

by Nash Turley on August 30

You may have seen the recent email about the changes in Facebook’s terms and conditions. Well I went through the rights and responsibilities and data use policy documents. Here are some telling quotes and summaries:

“We receive data about you whenever you interact with Facebook”.

This is all possible data you can imagine including your physical location, every page you look at and everything you click on and post.

“Granting us permission to use your information not only allows us to provide Facebook as it exists today, but it also allows us to provide you with innovative features and services we develop in the future that use the information we receive about you in new ways….Typically, information associated with your account will be kept until your account is deleted. “

I assume we give them permission just by agreeing to the terms and policies, so giving permission is the default. Is there any way we can use the service and NOT give them permission to store and use our data? Probably not.

“You give us permission to use your name, and profile picture, content, and information in connection with commercial, sponsored, or related content (such as a brand you like) served or enhanced by us. This means, for example, that you permit a business or other entity to pay us to display your name and/or profile picture with your content or information, without any compensation to you. If you have selected a specific audience for your content or information, we will respect your choice when we use it.”

Assume that all apps are just ploys to get and share more of your personal data.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.”

And finally this somewhat chilling statement written in all caps:

“FACEBOOK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACTIONS, CONTENT, INFORMATION, OR DATA OF THIRD PARTIES, AND YOU RELEASE US, OUR DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS FROM ANY CLAIMS AND DAMAGES, KNOWN AND UNKNOWN, ARISING OUT OF OR IN ANY WAY CONNECTED WITH ANY CLAIM YOU HAVE AGAINST ANY SUCH THIRD PARTIES.”

Kerry says: “President Obama believes there must be accountability for those who used the world’s most heinous weapons against the world’s most vulnerable people,” This comes as Obama viciously attacks and persecutes those who expose the heinous war crimes of his own administration–including drone strikes that have killed >3,000 people, mostly helpless civilians, and greatly expanding JSOC, a paramilitary killing force that operates secretly around the globe with no transparency or accountability.

Also, looks like all out war with Syria in imminent. It seems expected that we are to ignore the horrors of this world and the savage and detestable actions of the US abroad. Ignore that Obama–who was awarded the nobel peace prize–is a killer committing war crimes daily, eroding civil rights around the world and chipping away at constitutional right at home. Don’t fret, the machine is working just fine. Well I’m beginning to rattle loose and I wish I didn’t feel like an outsider for doing so.

Dirty Wars

by Nash Turley on August 25

Night raids, drone strikes, missile attacks, mercenaries, slaughtered civilians–these are the marks of a secret killing force, the Joint Special Operations Command. They operate under the direct control of the president, terrorizing the world and manufacturing new enemies with absolutely no oversight, transparency, or accountability. Jeremy Scahill tells a haunting and deeply disturbing story of what he uncovered about JSOC in the new documentary Dirty Wars. This film makes me feel deeply ashamed of my country — I think this is perhaps the most important film of our time:

Where’s My Bribe?

by Nash Turley on August 23

Legalized bribery in congress, this is the mechanism of plutocracy.

The statement from the petition:

The prosecution of Bradley Manning starkly contrasts to the US govt’s repeated failure to deliver justice for serious human rights violations committed during counter-terror operations of the past decade.

Manning, who released classified information exposing potential breaches of international humanitarian law by US forces, was sentenced in military court on Aug 21st to 35 yrs in prison.

Manning’s severe sentence contrasts with the leniency given those responsible for torture and other types of grave human rights violations he revealed.

To reduce this blight on the US human rights record, President Obama should grant Manning clemency for time served, protect whistleblowers, and provide accountability for crimes like those Manning exposed.

The Message of Peace From Bill Hicks

by Nash Turley on August 18

“You know all that money we spend on nuclear weapons and defense every year? Trillions of dollars, correct? Instead, if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world, and it would pay for it many times over, not one human being excluded, we could as one race explore outer space together, in peace, forever.” –Bill Hicks

Listen to it on loop here and let it sink in.

Film: Terms and Conditions May Apply

by Nash Turley on August 11

This is a film you should see, it is quite good. The primary message is that all digitized information is not private and can be used against you. These data are being used to incriminate people for thought crimes, some serious 1984 stuff.

El-P Verse

by Nash Turley on June 21

I am so obsessed with this El-P verse:

“Straight shots of the sterno plus, wick stuck in the bottle empty

Three blocks to the target we light it and lob it hard at Sentry

Four pigs of the oinking variety guard the market entry

Five minutes of flames and then aim the whistle my father lent me

Six o’clock we meet up and divvy the shells among the youngins

Seven continents in the shit and smoke like it’s fuckin London

Just before they ate up the funds our harmony love was bumping

Now government issue nines and point em where your blood is pumping

Tend to mop up these muttering zombies talker pieces

El’ll vent on you harder than Fukushima breezes

In the end when a dozen or so ajourn to reason

You’ll find the verdict return corrupted in murderous seasons

With inverted 31’s and other unlucky omens

Thats why I chug 7 and 7’s til I’m fucking homeless

And every time you think my fifteen minutes of fame are up

I’ll spit another sixteen to prove to the world I fucking own it”
